A unique concert this evening is a solo recital by virtuoso accordionist Djordje Gajic. After mesmerizing the audience yesterday in duo formation with his violinist wife Andrea, Djordje will this evening perform works by Scarlatti, Zolotaryov,\u00a0Alb\u00e9niz, Villa-Lobos, Repnikov, Lecuona, and Rossini.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The accordion is not a common instrument on our islands outside the use of it in the folk music environment. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience the instrument as a classical one, with some of the works on the programme that are exclusively written for it apart from others that have been transcribed from the original to suit the tone and dynamics of the accordion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Djordje Gajic\u00a0<\/strong>started his musical studies at the age of six in Serbia.\u00a0He graduated with honours from the\u00a0Russian Academy of Music\u00a0<\/em>in 1993, furthering his studies at the legendary\u00a0Gnessin Academy of Music<\/em>, after which he was appointed Assistant to Prof. Yuri Dranga.\u00a0Djordje is the recipient of numerous international competitions, notably, the\u00a0Grand Prix,<\/em> France, in 1987, and the\u00a0Tropheo Mondiale CMA<\/em>, in 1988.\u00a0 Most recently, he featured on the\u00a0BBC Radio 3<\/em>\u00a0programme\u00a0In Tune<\/em>.\u00a0He has performed with the Russian State Symphony Orchestra\u00a0<\/em>under the direction of Yvgeny Svetlanov, with the\u00a0BBC Symphony Orchestra,\u00a0<\/em>the\u00a0Scottish Symphony Orchestra<\/em>, and others.\u00a0He has also given solo recitals all over Europe and since settling in Britain, has toured the major cities extensively and regularly participates in important festivals, namely, in Dartington, Norwich, Salisbury and Birmingham.\u00a0Djordje is Professor of Accordion at the\u00a0Royal Conservatoire of Scotland<\/em>\u00a0and at\u00a0St Mary\u2019s Music School<\/em>, Edinburgh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This evenings\u2019 concert, which starts at 8pm, will take place in a new venue, namely, the lovely hall at the Bishop\u2019s Palace in Republic Street.
