The Walthew Trio

Programme

F. Poulenc (1899-1963)                       Sonata for Clarinet and Pianoforte

Y. Bowen (1844-1961)                          Sonata for French Horn and Pianoforte

C. Reinecke (1824-1910)                     Trio op. 274

The Walthew Trio came together through their professional connections with the city of Sheffield in England. The repertoire of Trios for clarinet, horn and pianoforte is not large, but three friends who were professionally involved with the Sheffield Music Academy, were inspired to explore this repertoire by playing the Trios of Richard H. Walthew and Carl Reinecke. Their exploration threw up some unusual and entertaining works from the 18th century to the present day by mostly neglected composers. These Trios deserve a day in the sun and so we hope that you too might be intrigued to find out what this unusual combination of instruments sounds like at various times in music history.
